Project MOOPIL (Massive Open Online Professional Individual Learning)

Small changes. Big differences.

Do you have English learners in your classroom? Do you expect to have English learners in the future? According to demographic trends, the answer is yes.

Many Texas teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, and parents come to us asking for help. They stress about making sure their English learners progress in TELPAS and STAAR, and they stress about day-to-day interactions with their students. Are my English learners engaged? How do I make sure they are comprehending? Am I being culturally responsive and supportive enough?

What is MOOPIL?

To meet this need for educators in our state, we are delivering Project MOOPIL. It stands for Massive Open Online Professional Individualized Learning.

Massive Open Online

We provide this at no cost to educators and is easy to access.

Professional

Our content is research-based and clearly presented.

You can select a course or unit from below that meets your specific need.

Learning

Our 30 minute courses are designed with busy educators in mind. You can invest little chunks of your time for maximum learning.

How can you benefit?

Learn important knowledge and skills like how to:

  • Make your teaching comprehensible
  • Make the learning environment stress-free and differentiated
  • Incorporate culturally responsive practices
  • Assess students, self, and staff in an ongoing and helpful way

This project is sponsored by the Office of English Language Acquisition, and 75 school districts across the state.

HOW MOOPIL HAS MADE AN IMPACT

  • Not only did I learn about specific strategies to use with parents and children, I learned background information and acquired a context for the strategies based on current research in the field. I find this important in that it makes the information and practice meaningful for how and why I work with the students. The format of the course was helpful because the modules were presented in short segments with follow up resources. This format fit how I learn best. One of the outcomes of me taking this course was that I was able to pass the TELPAS rater online training on the first try and am a rater for middle school ESL students. The counselor who is in charge of this asked me also to help two middle school teachers understand the ranking of the passages that the students completed. I was able to model what I learned for several colleagues. I know Project MOOPIL helped me.

  • My experience with the Project MOOPIL was invaluable! I have had several occasions this year where I have pulled strategies or modifications that we discussed. While I felt like I had a handle on these techniques and strategies, having them reinforced and/or brought back to memory has been a great help. It also has given me the confidence to grow my leadership duties on my campus.

  • My journey has been interesting and quite helpful in acquiring the knowledge and skills that have helped me obtain a better understanding of second language acquisition, cultural competency, and leadership where my English learners are concerned. I truly appreciate Project MOOPIL.

Classroom Strategies Y3

1. Leveled Questioning Strategies Y3

End Date: August 31, 2020 | .5 Credit
Murphy and Torff (2019) found that “teachers do not support rigorous instruction for ELLs at the same level that they do for GE [general education] students” (p. 97). They posited that a “rigor gap” is a factor that perpetuates EL underachievement. This module explores the use of leveled questioning strategies as a way to provide ELs with rigorous content while using language that is appropriate for the students’ language proficiency level.

As you complete this module, you will:

  • discover how to align questions to students’ language proficiency level, and
  • explore how to use leveled questions to engage ELs in rigorous content and higher-level thinking.

2. Realia Strategies Y3

End Date: August 31, 2020 | .5 Credit
In order to acquire English and advance academically, English learners need specialized instruction that incorporates comprehensible language and engagement strategies (Goldenberg, 2013; Krashen, 1982). One effective instructional support that promotes language acquisition and academic progress is the use of realia strategies. Teachers can make their lessons more memorable, engaging, and effective by bringing realia into their classrooms.

As you complete this module, you will:

  • discover how using realia in the classroom can support ELs English acquisition and academic progress, and
  • explore ways to incorporate realia strategies into your instructional practice.

In order to support the ELs in their classrooms, teachers will need to implement numerous strategies and instructional techniques. Certainly, no single practice or strategy is a cure-all that will solve the many EL educational challenges. Nevertheless, this module explores one simple, yet highly effective strategy, the use of manipulatives—a concrete way to connect objects to abstract concepts.

As you complete this module, you will:

  • gain an awareness of the importance of developing ELs’ cognitive and academic language proficiency, and
  • explore ways to use manipulatives to help ELs connect objects to concepts and to develop high levels of academic language and cognition.
